real life story of Suad Shamma abu dhabi hissah ec

Tell me a bit about yourself. What do you want the world to know about YOU?

Behind Lady Spatula, I am a mom and a wife and a human being. I want people to know that I have ups and downs, highs and lows, good days and bad days. I want them to understand that I do what I do because I am passionate about it and I love it but sometimes, I need to disconnect from Lady Spatula and just be Suad – the girl who loves to read, hang out in cafes, travel and do Zumba!

Describe a typical day in your life.

My days tend to be really hectic and don’t follow a particular path. I try to stick to a routine, but with 2 kids (aged 3 and 4) it’s not always possible.

It’s a little funny, but I can’t remember what my life was like exactly prior to Covid-19, so I will describe a typical day in my life during Covid-19.

It involves me waking up to one or both of my kids jumping into bed with us around 6am. Around 8am, I am up with my 4 year old son to begin his first class session, while simultaneously having my own work-related meeting, with my mic on mute for the most part so my colleagues don’t hear the chaos that is my life. Coffee, banana, then the day becomes one big blur of teaching my kids and work meetings, but around 11:30am, I take a break, where I go to the kitchen and begin lunch preparations.

Late afternoon, I put in a good hour of working out. Then it’s a combination of cooking, reading, watching shows, you name it. I usually have a lot going on with Lady Spatula, so a good portion of my time goes into preparing and creating content and working with other brands. I read a lot, and so I do a lot of that! Recently, I’ve also taken up drawing, so in the evenings, after the kids go to bed, I sit in my study, put on a show I can zone out in the background while I get some drawing done. I journal at least once a week, and I have a weekly to-do list that I make sure I tick-off by the end of the week, so I make sure I check that every day to see what I can contribute to it that day.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced during your journey to where you are today?

Finding my own unique voice and identity amidst all the other food bloggers. Trying to fit in, but also stand out, if that makes sense. Trying to build my identity and my brand and finding the patience and perseverance to not give up, even when it felt like it wasn’t worth all the effort.

Who would you describe as a role model and why?

To be honest with you, I can take the easy way out and say my mother or my father, but, I don’t know that I have one specific role model that stands out. There are many people in my life that I look up to for certain things, that have contributed to my success in certain ways, that have touched my life or changed me or made me who I am today.

Tell us one thing about you that most people don’t know.

I have almost every single Disney song memorized. And I can pretty much recite the entirety of the Lion King film from memory.

What is one piece of advice about how to cope with challenges/struggles you face in life that you would like to give to the world?

Remember that it is all temporary. Some days can seem long and tough and like the world is closing up on you, but remember, tomorrow is a new day. It will pass.

What is ONE word that you feel defines you? (It could be your profession, a personality trait, or a quality you possess).

Resilient.
