Becoming a Mother

Pregnancy is a journey and having a child is an enormous life-altering experience. Though challenging, it is the most exquisite journey for many women. During the pregnancy period women go through mental and physical stages that bring about changes in their bodies, food choices and wardrobe. Women learn so many things about themselves during the nine months of pregnancy and they discover strengths they did not know they possessed that benefit them throughout the motherhood experience.

Becoming a new mom can be tough and undoubtedly draining as the focus on the needs of an infant can oftentimes mean that mothers omit their own self-care and take for granted their own physical and psychological needs. As new moms are totally in love with their little ones, this period is probably filled with the most joyful moments of life. However, it is natural for moms to experience a complete variety of emotions and uncertainties during the prenatal and postnatal periods which shouldn’t be ignored.

Importance of Therapy

Childbirth can trigger a muddle of powerful emotions from excitement, joy, fear to anxiety. It can likewise bring about something to new moms that they probably didn’t expect — depression. Motherhood is truly different for every woman; some moms are prepared to handle this new chapter as their experience has exceeded expectations and things went better than they had hoped. However, others may find themselves distressed and struggling.  Depression is not a sign that they do not love their new baby. Rather, it’s a psychological condition brought upon by the loss of certain aspects of their old self and the shift to a new identity of motherhood that is a major life transition.

So, to every woman who’s experiencing glitches during prenatal and postnatal period, please always remember that you are not alone; you are perfectly normal and those difficult stages you have not yet overcome will not make you less of a mother. If struggles persistently arise and are too much to bear, ask for professional help.  There are a number of options available to support you including therapy. This could be the best gift you can give to yourself as it addresses specifically the issues you are struggling with and will offer you the freedom to talk them through without fear or judgement. Support and therapy will help you find a solution so that you will be able to enjoy your time with your new baby and your new life as a mother. Make time for yourself and infuse it with action because in the end, what matters most is the little bundle of joy in your arms.

Every woman’s journey is different; some are single out of choice, never giving a thought to marriage or children. For other women, this is not their choice. Regardless, women are expected to become mothers whether they feel this is their destiny or not. The point here is that being a mother is an absolute and wonderful calling bestowed from above so, if you are a mom, enjoy every precious moment and thank God every day for your little nursling. Thus, as a mom, you need to take good care of yourself, your maternal mental health really matters because as the saying goes, “if a mom goes down, the whole vessel goes down”.  Hence, rebuild yourself, learn to seek help, have sufficient rest, mind good nutrition and grasp with grace all your circumstances.
