Do you regularly feel fretful or have trouble in controlling your thoughts? Do you encounter a lot of headaches and feel butterflies in your stomach when faced with unfamiliar situations? What about agonizing unnecessarily over the future or solid dread of particular circumstances? If so, then you may have an issue with anxiety. When you are anxious, you can feel it in your body as unsteadiness, tension, sweating, becoming flushed, shaking or just the feeling that things that may appear to be simple for others may be daunting or worrying for you. What is Anxiety?

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), anxiety is defined as an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts and physical changes like increased blood pressure. People with anxiety disorders usually have recurring intrusive thoughts or concerns. They may avoid certain situations out of worry. Anxiety is often conveyed through excessive worry that something bad might happen. Anxiety isn’t always a bad thing, especially when it comes in the form of a sort of apprehensive strength that encourages you. Anxiety is a piece of our reality; the key is how to cope with it and how to shield yourself from causing it to interrupt your daily life.

How Do You Manage Anxiety?

Managing anxiety can be physically debilitating and may leave you feeling drained. When you feel intense anxiety taking over then talk about it with someone you trust and let them know how they can help you, divert your attention to something that calms you and accept the fact that you cannot control everything. You may have tried all the self-help strategies to fight with it but you are still experiencing difficulties and this negatively affects your work, home life, and/or relationships. Anxiety can turn into an emotional wellness issue if it impacts your capacity to carry on with life. In such cases, psychological assistance should be considered.

Can a Psychologist Help?

Psychologists are highly skilled and competent to address the unique needs of each individual. They can help you classify the factors that contribute to your anxiety. Psychologists aim to learn what level of difficulties you are having so that they can generate a plan to help you build upon the skills you need to tackle your anxiety. Psychologists can offer help and enable you to manage any difficulties, grow new abilities and change unhappy practices. Also, as different approaches and techniques work for different people, they can tailor the type of therapy that would best suit you after the initial assessment. Sometimes, just talking to someone about what triggers you or how you feel when you are overwhelmed, can help ease your troubles. Psychologists are trained to assess, identify, and target your problematic areas and help you work through them so that you are equipped with skills you can use in your everyday life.

Anxiety is very treatable and you don’t have to suffer in silence. Anxiety is a normal occurrence and a piece of a person’s strategy to adapt to life. It is sometimes useful since it makes you more aware of danger, expands your concentration, and enhances your thoughts; however, it can be very debilitating when it is something you have to deal with regularly. Seeking professional help is the right move as therapy can flip your life around as you learn to manage your anxiety and face your challenges with a different perspective.
